Oliver Brown has lived all the nine
and a half years of his life at Number
58 Wigwell Avenue and he is not at
all sure that he wants to move far
from London, to Gullywith in the North
of England. But his mother has her
heart set on the rundown, long-empty
old place in the middle of the countryside.
Gullywith seems cold and damp and
unwelcoming - and Olly is miserable.
He misses his old house in Wigwell
Avenue, and all his old friends.
Olly’s mother is worried that
they will never turn the chilly farmhouse
into a family home. His father
isn’t helping – all he
is interested in is books about old
cars. And soon after they arrive,
strange things start happening.
Small spiteful stones with strange
markings scratched on them appear
in odd places.
Olly meets a girl called KK who takes
him to meet the mysterious Nonny Dreever – the one person who might be
able to help Olly find out what the
mysterious stones are.
Nonny Drever lives in a house on
stilts, full of strange things like
a Christmas tree, even though it’s
not Christmas, and a pet owl.
Nonny Drever looks at the angry stones,
and tells Olly he must put them back
where they once came from –
to Withern Mere.
But what is Withern Mere? To
find out, Olly must go on a journey
far more dangerous than the one from
Wigwell Avenue to Gullywith. On it, he will encounter a Stone King,
discover the mysteries contained within
the covers of a magical book, and
attend a Midwinter Revel deep within
Withern Hill. And in the
middle of everything, Olly begins
to suspect that Mervyn Crust, who
his mother has decided Olly should
be friends with, is more than just
an irritation, but that he might also
be a spy…
Ice caves…brave tortoises…a great Castle rising from
the Mere… and The Stone Army,
which is determined to fight to the
end to get Gullywith back…
Excitement. Mystery. Magic.
And in the middle of it all,
are the Brown family. Pete. Helen.
Olly and one year old Lula.
Come and meet them all in The Battle
for Gullywith. |
